Smallholder coffee Irrigation models to be piloted in nine ACDP districts.
The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries will support the implementation of smallholder coffee irrigation models in nine selected districts under the Agriculture Cluster Development Project (ACDP). These models will be implemented in partnership with the district local governments, through the matching grant model with individual beneficiary farmers contributing 25% and Government contributing 75% (not exceeding UGX40m) of the total investments. This model is similar to the Matching Grants model where farmer organizations have been supported to put up post- harvest storage facilities and acquire processing machinery.
In an awareness creation workshop held for district local government leaders, Engineer Dennis Tumusiime, ACDP Water Engineer, said that this support is expected to establish 50 smallholder irrigation systems for three to five acre garden of a beneficiary farmer. Farmers whose gardens are less than 3 acres will be guided to obtain support from the Ministry’s Small-Scale Irrigation Program under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UgIFT) Additional Financing - Small scale irrigation component.
A call for Expression of Interest with the required details will be put out in early January 2021. The pilot districts are Bukwo, Bunyangabu, Hoima, Kabarole, Kasanda, Kikuube, Kiryandongo and Masindi.
