More Women farmer groups embrace Agro-processing

 

Introduction

Formed in 2014, Binagoro women’s group  is located in  Medennga village, Midigo sub county.  This 30 member group was among the first three groups in Yumbe district to benefit from the ACDP first cohort matching grant. Overall the group benefited from a matching grant of  shs 189,000,000.  Members  contributed  shs.  62,370,000  while government through ACDP contributed  shs 126,630,000.

Benefits 
They started construction of their storage facility in March 2020. One year later they had completed construction, and in April 2021, they were able to purchase a cassava milling machine at 32 million shillings.

Before construction of the store, they were keeping their cassava in their houses and would have to walk up to Madigo subcounty.  Grace Chandiru, a group member said the grant had helped in many ways. For example, they are able to mill cassava at shs 100 per kilo for community members, maize at shs 200 and sorghum at shs 200. In a day they make between shs 20,000 – 25,000. The sales are still low due to competition. On a daily basis they use two litres of fuel bought at shs 4000. When they improve their business, they hope to make more money and profits.

  Introduction Doho Irrigation Farmers’ Cooperative Society (DIFACOS) are ACDP cohort three matching grantees. This seven year old Cooperative Society is under the mandate of   Ministry of Water and Environment in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and replaced the management committee in 2014. Monica Higenyi reaps big from bumper harvests

  Introduction Monica Higenyi is a model famer in Butaleja district, she started farming by growing vegetables and vending. She also used to make and sell herbal medicine. Mr Were, the DAO says, “ This is when   I noticed her and gave her 10 bags of cassava   cuttings to plant. Then we came back and bought the cuttings from her. I noticed she was very hardworking   farmer and was eager to grow and learn”. Monica and her husband Patrick Higenyi   enrolled in the ACDP   late in 2019. While Monica enrolled for maize, her husband enrolled for cassava.   To enroll in the e-Voucher program, they each paid a membership of   UGX 148, 500 and were trained on good agronomic practices. Benefits   According to Monica, they were taught   how to plant a maize variety called ‘Bazoka’. Maize is usually sold at a low price but because of the variety I planted the produce is of high quality and I was able to sell at a high price.   I used to plant maize before but the profits were not high”.
